The purpose of this document is to: communicate to all stakeholders in our IB Merici College community the expectations for creating and maintaining an inclusive learning environment for all; Provide clear guidelines to all stakeholders by defining appropriate vision, goals, and practice in the context of the IB Diploma and Middle Years Programme; Establish the responsibilities of all stakeholders related to inclusivity; Outline and communicate the various accommodations and support opportunities that are available to students and teachers in line with IB guidelines and procedures.
Language is integral to enhancing students’ skills in cross-cultural communication. Merici College is an internationally-minded school, where students acquire a wider-world view through the understanding and appreciation of other cultures as well as their own culture. The Merici College Language philosophy is also underpinned by The Catholic Education K-12 Position Paper English as an Additional Language or Dialect.
At Merici College we follow the attached Catholic Education’s Medical Welfare of Students Policy. Please familiarise yourself with this policy so that parents, carers, and school staff can work collaboratively to ensure your student’s medical welfare during school hours.
The Positive Behaviour (Personal Best) Policy is informed by a commitment to the principles of Restorative Practices. The College aims to promote a sense of responsibility amongst its students and recognises that mistakes will occur. Inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated but students must also be permitted to repair harm caused by their actions, have an opportunity for personal growth and be provided with strategies to deal with situations in the future.
Merici College is a Catholic school which is committed to promoting Christian values where all members of our community are to be treated with dignity, courtesy and respect.
We believe that all members of the school community have the right to a learning and work environment free from intolerance, harassment and humiliation.
We all share a responsibility to create a culture of caring. This ideal is embedded in our ethos and is fostered by our Pastoral Care Policy and Practices.
A variety of animals, including dogs, are becoming an ever-popular and worthwhile addition to schools across the country. Children can benefit educationally and emotionally, increase their understanding of responsibility and develop empathy and nurturing skills through contact with a dog. In addition to these benefits, children take great enjoyment from interaction with a dog. At Merici College, we value the development of children’s well-being along with their social education as highly as we value academia. We believe a school dog will be a unique way to enrich all areas of the children’s wider education, skills and wellbeing.
